How to do smudged eyeliner (tired girl liner)
Smudged kohl liner is the biggest eye trend this fall. Here is how a makeup artist does it so it looks lived-in on purpose, not like last night's makeup.
Three clients in two weeks have shown me the same runway photo: black liner smudged into the lash line, almost nothing else on the face. "Can you do that — but deliberate?"
Short answer: smudged eyeliner is a soft kohl pencil pressed into the roots of the lashes, diffused upward with a small dense brush within thirty seconds, and kept close to the lash line. The skill is not the smudging. It is stopping early and keeping the rest of the face quiet.
What is "tired girl" makeup?
It is the name TikTok gave to a look the runways had been circling for a while, and it landed properly this fall. Fendi and Burberry both sent out kohl-heavy, smudged eyes, and searches for the look are up more than 200 percent on last year. The idea is makeup that does not pretend: liner that looks like it has lived a little, skin that still looks like skin, under-eyes that are not spackled flat.
I like it a great deal, for a practical reason. It is the most forgiving eye look there is. A sharp wing punishes a shaky hand. A smudged line rewards it.
What it is not is an excuse for makeup that has actually slid. The difference between "tired girl" and tired is control, and control lives in three places: where the line sits, how far the smudge travels, and what the rest of the face is doing.
Why does my smudged eyeliner just look messy?
Almost always one of four things.
The pencil is too hard. A firm, waxy pencil drags, skips and leaves a line with edges, and by the time you have smudged it you have rubbed the lid raw. You need a real kohl — soft enough to melt slightly on the back of your hand.
The smudge travels too far. Diffused liner should stay in a band roughly the width of your lash roots, plus a little haze above. Once it creeps toward the crease, it stops reading as liner and starts reading as a bruise.
It was smudged too late. Kohl gives you about thirty seconds of movement. After that you are not blending it, you are scraping it, and it breaks into patches.
The under-eye is heavy. Smudged liner over thick concealer turns grey and cracks by lunch. The under-eye wants almost nothing on it for this look — a small triangle of concealer, placed the way I describe in the concealer placement post, and no more.
The skill in smudged liner is not the smudging. It is knowing when to put the brush down.
How do you smudge eyeliner, step by step?
This is exactly the version I do on clients. It takes about four minutes an eye the first time and ninety seconds once you have the feel for it. Do both eyes to the same step before moving on — they match far better that way.
Step 1: Start with a clean lid and a warm pencil
No eye cream and no slippery primer on the lid; both make kohl travel all day. If your lids get oily, dust on a whisper of translucent powder. Then warm the pencil tip on the back of your hand for two seconds so it glides instead of dragging.
Step 2: Press the pencil into the lash roots
Lift the lid gently at the brow with one fingertip and wiggle the pencil into the roots of the upper lashes in short presses, working from the outer corner in. You are filling the little gaps between lashes, not drawing a line above them.

Step 3: Smudge upward straight away
Within thirty seconds, take a small, dense smudge brush and flick upward from the lash line in short strokes — never along it. Keep the haze within a few millimeters of the lashes. If it creeps toward the crease, you have gone too far.

Step 4: Lower lash line, outer two-thirds only
Look up, press the pencil into the roots of the lower lashes along the outer two-thirds, then give it one pass of the brush. Leave the inner third bare — dark liner all the way to the inner corner closes the eye. The waterline is optional: it gives the most runway version, but skip it if your eyes water or you wear contacts.

Step 5: Set the smudge with dark shadow
Press a tiny amount of dark brown or charcoal matte eyeshadow over the liner with the same brush. That powder layer is what makes the look last until midnight without sharpening the soft edge.

Step 6: Stop there
One light coat of mascara or none at all. No sharp, sculpted brow. Soft cheeks and a soft mouth — a blurred lip is the natural partner for this eye.
Which eyeliner is best for smudging?
A soft kohl pencil. A gel pot works if you are quick; liquid liner does not smudge, it smears. These are the two I carry for this look, one at each end of the price range.
| MAC Eye Kohl | Rimmel London Soft Kohl Kajal | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | about $24 | about $5 |
| Texture | creamy, melts on contact | softer, more buttery |
| Smudge window | around 30 seconds | closer to a minute |
| Best for | all-day wear, the waterline | learning the technique, a heavier smudge |
MAC Eye Kohl, about $24. The pencil most working artists have had in the kit for years. It goes on dark in one press, smudges cleanly and then genuinely stays put, which is exactly the balance this look needs. It is the one I trust on a waterline for an evening booking.
Rimmel London Soft Kohl Kajal, about $5. The five-dollar pencil that keeps turning up in professional kits for a reason: it is softer than most pencils at five times the price, which makes it ideal for learning. It gives a heavier, smokier smudge — press a little shadow over it and it lasts through dinner.

Does smudged eyeliner work on hooded or older eyes?
Yes, and often better than a precise line, which disappears into a hooded fold or catches every crease. Not sure whether your eyes count as hooded? The eye shape quiz tells you in five questions. Three adjustments:
- Hooded eyes: do the smudge with your eyes open and looking straight ahead, so you can see where the fold falls. Take the haze slightly higher at the outer corner only, so it peeks out above the hood.
- Mature lids: skip the waterline, keep the pencil soft, and set with a matte brown shadow rather than black. Black kohl on crepey skin looks harsher than brown-black.
- Small or close-set eyes: lower lash line on the outer third only, and keep the inner half of the upper line thinner.
If your under-eyes are genuinely dark and you would rather cover them than lean into the trend, correct first with a thin layer of peach — the method is in the color-correcting post — and keep the liner sitting just above it.
My pro tips for smudged eyeliner
- Blunt a freshly sharpened pencil on the back of your hand first. A needle-sharp kohl tip drags and scratches instead of pressing.
- Keep a cotton bud with a drop of moisturizer nearby. If the smudge travels, lift it off with one roll — never rub, or you smear the rest.
- Judge it from arm's length in daylight. Up close in a mirror every smudge looks too much; across a room it looks right.
- For evening, add intensity only at the outer corner. A second press of kohl there gives depth without widening the whole haze.
- Brown-black instead of black if you are fair or the look feels heavy. Same technique, noticeably softer.
Frequently asked
Should you put eyeliner on your waterline?
For the fullest version of this look, yes, but it is optional. Kohl on the waterline gives runway intensity and makes the eye look deeper-set. If your eyes water, you wear contacts, or the liner migrates into the inner corner within an hour, leave the waterline bare and keep the smudge on the lash roots instead.
How do you keep smudged eyeliner from moving?
Start on a clean lid without eye cream, smudge within thirty seconds, then press a dark brown or charcoal eyeshadow over the liner with the same brush. That powder layer locks the kohl in place without sharpening the edge. On oily lids, dust a little translucent powder on before you start as well.
Can you smudge liquid eyeliner?
Not really. Liquid liner dries in seconds and breaks rather than diffuses, so it looks smeared instead of soft. If liquid is all you have, draw a very thin line, then immediately press a dark eyeshadow along it with a smudge brush. A soft kohl pencil is far easier and far more forgiving.
Is tired girl makeup flattering?
It suits more faces than people expect, because a soft line forgives uneven lids and unsteady hands. The key is balance: if the eyes are smudged, the skin, brows and lips stay quiet. Everything heavy at once reads as smudged by accident rather than smudged on purpose.
If you want to see it done on your own eyes before a night out, that is exactly what a one-to-one lesson is for. Bring the pencil you already own. It is probably soft enough.
